Here we have a description of how the Atraso came to be, written in too much detail...

The Atraso, in short simple terms, are a rapidly devolving race of humans actually, devolving referring to a genetic simplification of species. humans and anthros are two of the most complex species on the planet. Atraso are usually born, therefore, as humans or anthros who begin to rapidly deteriorate to a more simplified creatures like a cat or dog. Some atraso are born in this simplified state, others are born to human parents and simply develop the trait later on. confused? i knew you would be...

Atraso is actually a derogatory term used to refer to a disease that sprouted up in Spain a long long time ago. A man contracted it from a dog who had bitten him and soon came down with a dreadful sickness that robbed him of breath, twisted his bones and caused such unbearable pain, his nervous actually "short-circuited" itself so to speak. Days alter, a woman, bitten by the same black dog, showed the same symptoms and she too eventually died. Then, her children were reported with the same dreadful disease, even though they hadn't even seen the dog that bit their mother. Then, the woman's husband, his co-workers, all these people began getting sick and dying, despite the lack of a dog's presences. The disease was dubbed Doleo (pronounced Dole-leo), the Painful Virus.

The Spanish, fearing it would be another bubonic plague, fled the country immediately. What was unknown at that times was this disease had been in the human genome for almost all of our species existence. It is caused by one simple bacteria that actually clings to certain strands of the nervous system. Normally, it is harmless. However, something in the bite of the dog reawakened the bacteria's potential to kill and allowed it to multiply rapidly. At first, it would only multiply around the bite wound, causing immense pain since it's anchored in the nerves themselves, though this pain was generally treated like an infection or something mindless. But, as the bacteria traveled up the nervous system, it would only cause more damage, minor at first since it would be spread thin around every nerve in the body. This stage of the disease, where there are so few activated bacteria spread around the whole human body that it creates almost no effect, is where much of the Spanish people were when they left. The active disease was in, on and around them but they didn't know it.

So, as you can imagine, the panic only grew as people in other countries started dying from this disease, the once low concentration of bacteria beginning to multiply and affect nervous functions and even genetic distribution in individuals all over the world. Mass panic ensued and much of the earth's population was wiped out by the disease. However, something was soon discovered about the way the bacteria affected genetics. An infected woman gave birth to a strange child. The baby had a tail, a long whip-like tail and over-sized ears. The child was immediately taken in for scientific study and, lone behold, it was dubbed the first atraso, which is Spanish for backward. The baby was devolving as times went on, the ears growing longer until the tops flopped over like a dog's and the tail growing black fur. Eventually the fur spread over the baby's back and legs and the face began to morph into a snout. This Atraso child lived to be about 7 years old but was assassinated by a religious group that believed it to be the son of the devil...

But other atraso began sprouting up all over, many of which being born from anthros actually, since the bacteria never actually effected them for some reason. And from there, the Atraso race was born. Now a days, atraso aren't actually born in human form. Now they're usually born half way between a human and an animal, or born at the far end of the spectrum where they are mostly ferals. human-born atraso aren't impossible though. They are just not born as atraso in that case. Instead, they are born as humans and later contract the disease that causes them to devolve, since the Doleo bacteria have been evolving as well due to failed attempts at cures and vaccinations. So, now, rather than killing the victim, Doleo turns them into Atraso, "those that devolve".
